Child’s Play (Week 2 Sermon)

We live in a society that teaches us to blame our problems and lack of success on anything other than ourselves.  Poiticians blame it on the former person, Nascar blames it on the car, and Milli Vannilli told us to blame it on the rain!

In our relationship with Jesus we are fully responsible for our personal growth.  How much time we spend with Him, how much we focus on Him, how much we read His word, and how often we pray is our responsible!  Our growth and maturity depends on our commitment.

It’s “Go” Day

Yesterday was a unique day in the short 9 month life of Awestruck Church.  We cancelled our service so our folks could serve.  I had no clue what to expect or if anyone would show up.  (It would have been a great excuse to skip church and sleep in)  To my surprise, we had more people than we had jobs, and the Awestruck crowd knocked it out of the park!!!  My personal goal was to see at least half of our average adult attendance show up to work and serve.  We’ve been averaging between 65-80 adults each week, and we had 42 people serving on Sunday morning plus 5 kids!  I was worried about this goal after 24 people informed me that they were either going to be out of town or working, but we reached and exceeded it.

I was so proud of all that was accomplished yesterday.  One of our families made homemade biscuits to deliver to homeless people on their way.  One crew worked around the home of a lady recently diagnosed with cancer that has been virtually immobilized for a few months.  They weeded, planted flowers and vegetable garden, trimmed hedges, and sanded and repainted her rocking chairs.  The other crew met at Eastern Middle School (where we have church) to wash all the outside windows, pull all the weeds, pick up trash around the building and parking lots, and make over 100 thank you bags for the staff.  We finished the day by taking dinner to the local fire station.  I got reports from a few more folks about their acts of service over the weekend, because they couldn’t join us on Sunday.

There were so many people working that I didn’t even have a task?  It gave me the opportunity to walk around and record the activities, so look for a video very soon.  Thank to all the folks at Awestruck who showed up to be the Church!

1.  I won 7 out of 10 categories in my first week Fantasy Baseball matchup!  I’m sure it was a fluke and will change, BUT it happened and I’m pumped!  🙂

2.  Let’s talk about our first Easter at Awestruck Church.  I was blown away by how many people showed up, but more importantly the stories of our first time guests.

3.  I was most impressed and humbled by how strongly God revealed Himself through our service.  There was a sweet spirit in the room…I didn’t want to leave.

4.  Now that you know the outcome, let me explain the morning leading up to that result.  This was an continuation of God teaching our team that it is all about Him and has nothing to do with our plans and ability.

5.  Saturday Night:  I’m laying in bed talking w/ God about Awestruck and remembering how anxious and excited we all were the night before our first service in Sept ’08.  I asked God to return that same sense of expectancy and dependance to our team.  Little did I know…

6.  He’d already planned to do that!  When we arrived early Sunday morning…with all our own plans and strategies…we discovered the school had placed 6 large wrestling mats on the stage we normally use!!!  Impossible to move!

7.  Our only alternative was another room, which is used mostly for storage and…well, junk!  It was not ready to use for our service that morning.

img_08488.  That said, here’s the incredible part of the story…our Team stepped up Huge and we cleaned that room out, swept the floor, brought in a bunch of chairs, removed all the trash, changed the entire stage set up, draped off the big stuff, and made it into a beautiful place to Worship!

9.  Why is that so incredible?  God restored our sense of expectancy and dependance on a day we needed it the most!  Then He showed up and made some major changes in the lives of the folks attending!  Booyah!

10.  The past two Monday Downloads have been mostly about what God is teaching us through some struggles at Awestruck and not my week.  I feel like this has been the important stuff that I wanted to share the last two weeks.  Hope it has been helpful to you.

1.  It feels great to have my Mac back!  I was a bit disconnected for 14 days, but I am back on track now.

mac2.  Speaking of the Mac…the reason I bought it was to avoid “Crashes”, but that was my second hard drive fail in 18 months?  Oh well, not even that could ever make me switch back to a PC!  🙂

3.  The last few weeks have been Insane at Awestruck Church!  We finished up “The Next Step” series this week and God is doing some BIG things in peoples lives.

4.  Travis Moore preached his first message…ever…at Awestruck yesterday.  He knocked it out of the park to finish up our series.

5.  It was nice to have a break this weekend.  I am proud of our team for having everything set up and running smoothly w/out me there to help (or harass)

6.  Of all days for me to take off, there was a Basketball tournament going on right beside our service space in the Middle School…and we didn’t know until they showed up.  Those guys handled it superbly!

7.  My little girl turned 3 years old last week!  I cannot believe she is already 3 and ready for Dance Class!

8.  Micah’s Baseball season kicks off tonight!  He is ready and so am I.

kickball9.  My Kickball season starts Wednesday…Yes I said Kickball!  I play in an Adult Kickball league w/ GSO Parks and Rec, and I love it.

10.  Speaking of Kickball…don’t judge it until you experience it.  It is one of the most competitive sports I’ve ever been part of.  Those folks take it serious.

11.  Speaking of Serious…This Guy got me suckered into my first Fantasy Baseball league.  The draft was last night, and I don’t think I had a clue what I was doing.  But, it was kind of fun?

“The Next Step” (Week 3 Sermon)

My kids love to create small masterpieces with construction paper, markers, glitter and too much glue!  It is produced for the sole purpose of being displayed on our Refrigerator.  More importantly, it is their way of letting me know they love me and were thinking of me.

We have the resources and time available to us to create “Fridge Art” for God our father every day.  It is up to us to choose to show Him how much we love Him with who we are and what we do.

“The Next Step”

the-next-stepWe talk about topics in church that fill people’s minds with great inspiration and knowledge, but leaves some confused about what to do with it.  I am often asked “What is my next step?” by people that want to continue growing in their relationship with Christ.  At Awestruck we are going to talk about some practical and necessary steps to take.  This series will be impacting for those still questioning and the more mature Christian.  Following Christ is much simpler than most make it out to be, but following through with the commitment can be difficult.  Join us this month as we talk about “The Next Step”!

I’m Surrounded…

rioting-crowdI’m so grateful to be surrounded by great leaders at Awestruck Church!  Setting up early each week then staying late to pack it up is a challenge.  There is a great investment of time and sweat to make our service happen each Sunday.  I am so proud of the men and women that show up every week to get things done…many who then carry out vital roles of ministry after the hard labor.  Everyone chips in and no one pulls “rank” when it comes to the medial tasks!

Evan and Heather Blackerby came on board with Awestruck last summer as “staff” without a salary.  Evan is responsible for the Creative Navigation and Future planning.  His mind is full of great ideas and creative expressions for our worship time.  They recently posted their Monthly update and I wanted to pass it on to you.  It is always great to hear what God is doing through another perspective.  You can click HERE to see The Blackerby’s most recent update.

I love what God is up to in our church, and can’t wait to see what His future holds!
